27 things I have learned in 27 years

With my birthday pretty much here, I wanted to do something a little different than my normal posts and tell you the 27 things I have learned in my 27 years of life

1: Don’t take life for granted.

2: Bring your camera with you everywhere.

3: Little kind gestures go a LONG way.

4: Start your day off with the mindset that today will be a good day.

5: Travel, travel, travel. Even if it’s by yourself.

6: Take care of yourself. You only get one body to carry you through this life.

7: A few minutes of meditation can make a significant difference in your day.

8: Never say you don’t like it until you try it.

9: Eat all the food. Always be trying new foods.

10: Dream big, and go after it.

11: Never underestimate the power of yoga.

12: Face your fears head-on.

13: Never stop learning.

14: If you don’t like something, do something about it.

15: Dogs make me very happy and I would have 1,000 if I could.

16: Slow. Down. - Stop & smell the roses.

17: Make mistakes. Learn from them. Keep going.

18: Admit when you are wrong.

19: Learn about yourself as much as you possibly can so you can use every part of you to your advantage.

20: Surround yourself with people that lift you up and encourage you to continue up.

21: Use please and thank you.

22: Everyone is human. Be gracious and understand that everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect. Be slow to anger. And ask for forgiveness when you make a mistake and own up to it.

23: It’s okay to be wrong.

24: Let go of things that are toxic. If someone or something in your life does not bring you joy or causes you constant pain, remove it from your life. It has no place there.

25: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be curious. (Curiosity doesn’t always kill the cat).

26: Constantly remind yourself of your dreams. Make vision boards, have daily alarm reminders, and even make yourself accountable. This way every time you make a decision you can have your dreams in mind.

27: Be unapologetically you.

A lot of these sound like advice, but it’s everything that I have been taught that really has stuck with me and means a lot. I try to remind myself a lot of these things daily and I challenge you to at least one of these things. Which one are you going to choose?

Ice Cream Month Session

It is July which means it is National Ice Cream Month! And to celebrate, I collaborated with The Chocolate Moose and some amazing Bloomington High School North students! What is your favorite flavor?

What to bring to your sessions with me

It’s time to plan your session. You have got your clothes picked out, the location is perfect, and you have discussed everything you want with me, but what in the world do you bring to your session with you? I wanted to give you some help into what you should bring with you to your session. And not necessarily what you want as props. I have created multiple categories to help you with each and every situation.

Accessories (scarves, jewelry), things that are important to you or even the reason why you are getting the photos done (business owner? Bring something that you sell. Love a sport? Bring your favorite jersey).

Bring something you all love to do (board games, books, etc.), something you all love or even something you all have in common.

Some toys for afterwards (or during the last set of pictures) and maybe even some candy for afterwards. Also something for them to look at next to my camera (stuffed animal) is very helpful.

I always suggest noisy toys or some that will distract them, I typically have a bag that I wear so I can easily move my arm for the toys to make noise. Also, some treats are helpful as well.

High school seniors

Props of things you are involved in (instrument, letterman jacket, art items, etc.), T shirt or clothing item of college you are going to or what you are going into (military, workforce). Literally ANYTHING you like to do.

Props of things you like to do together or anything that has special meaning to you.

Engaged Couples

The same as couples, but adding in the big shiny thing (aka the RING!).

This applies to every single group. An extra brush or comb, hairspray, extra bobby pins/hair ties, and a lint roller.

It doesn’t have to be a whole ordeal on what you bring with you, just think of essentials and feel free to message me if you still feel lost.

If you think anything else needs to be added to this list, PLEASE comment below. What did you find helpful that you brought to your session?

Sharing my "why"

Being an entrepreneur is not as glamorous as people make it out to be. It is hard work and exhausting. There are days when I want to ram my head into the wall. Those days often in me questioning “Why did I even start this business if all I am going to be is frustrated and disappointed?”

These are the days I need to remember why I even started this business in the first place. I need to go to the place of inspiration and all the hopes and dreams. I wanted to share these reasons with you to give you a glimpse into my life. Here are the “why’s” for what I do what I do.

Why did I choose to start this business?

To make someone else (my clients) happy. To give someone a smile when they opened their packages of photos to hang on their wall. To grant them memories that they can hold onto forever.

I chose to start this business just on a thought that I was good enough to someone. And honestly that was enough. I had just graduated from college a few months earlier, and I had applied to SO many jobs in photojournalism and I made it very obvious that I wanted a certain job.

It was a very difficult time for me, because I felt like a failure. I just spent four years of college in a major that didn’t “do anything for me.” It didn’t land me a job. It made me very frustrated. So I decided if I couldn’t find a job for me, I would make one for me.

Why did I think photography was a good idea?

Ever since I was little, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I may not be the best and am constantly critiquing myself, but I knew I could do it for someone.

I know this is a VERY saturated market, but I thought I could stand out from the rest of them. Sometimes it feels like I don’t still. But to someone, I do.

It is something I feel confident in. It’s something I felt very proud to put my name on. I have been doing photography for a while and it never occurred to me to start a business in that field. There was just something telling me I should.

Why do I continue to be in this saturated business?

I love making people happy. I love the look on their face when they see their photographs. Seeing everyone happy makes me happy. I’ve even been told that there is a smile on my face when I am taking the photographs. It reminds me that I really do love what I do. It is hard, but what in life isn’t? Nothing great in life comes easy.

It gives me so much joy when I am seeing the photos on my camera screen and going to my computer and editing and then delivering it to my clients. And it still makes me giddy when clients say they love my work. It’s those moments that make me do what I am doing because they boost my confidence each and every time I have a session.

When I get down in the dumps, or it gets hard, or something doesn’t go the way I wanted I need to constantly remind myself “my whys.” You are the reason I keep going each and every day. It is someone like you that makes it all worth it. So thank you for everything you do.

All about me

It has been a while since I did an introductory blog post, so I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself so you can get to know me.

Hi, my name is Kaytee and I am the girl behind the lens of Kaytee Lorentzen Photography. I started this business back in October 2015. I have a bunch more things about me that don’t involve photography. And here are 10 of them.

1: I am a ISFJ on the Meyer’s Briggs Scale.

Introvert, Sensing, Feeling, Judging is what I come out to be. I took a quiz at 16personalities.com which is a free version of the Meyer’s Briggs Scale. It gives you all sorts of information and really digs deep into your personality type. If you want to know all about my personality, you can visit them at 16personalities.com.

2: Traveling is one of my favorite things to do.

There is just something about traveling that I just can’t help but love. Ever since I went to France right after my high school graduation, I was hooked! During college, I wasn’t able to really do this as much because I had to worry about schooling. Then, I had the opportunity to go to Europe again to meet a pen pal. Since then, I have felt the need to travel more.

3: I am training to be the best version of myself that I can be - health wise.

Back in the middle of 2017, I had become very unhappy with the way I looked. I had enough. Nothing was fitting anymore and I just felt blah. I started watching my food intake, but then in January 2018 I started a workout program that helped me keep completely transform. It established a habit in me that made me really try. Now, I have lost over 20 pounds and I am starting to build muscle and I feel phenomenal. I can’t wait to see where I can go.

4: I just newly became an aunt a few months ago.

Anyone who knows me, knows I personally do not want children. Don’t get me wrong, they are great, it’s just not something that I see in my future. That is why I am so happy that I got to become an aunt recently. His name is Oxford and he is the cutest thing to grace this planet (but I am VERY biased). I am so excited for all the moments I am going to have with him and how much I get to spoil the little guy.

5: My dog is my fur child.

Instead of human children, I want fur children. I currently own an Australian Shepherd named Kora. She is my first ever dog and she is my world. I also think she is the cutest dog to grace this planet (again, very biased). She is super friendly, loves kids, and running. She is also super intelligent which is so helpful when it comes to any sort of training.

6: I am a busy body.

I am not able to sit still. It’s hard for me to understand what “rest” really is. For example, my rest day includes me working on my computer on my business. I don’t like to just sit and watch TV or sleep all day. It makes me feel very lazy. Unless it’s structured rest (baths, massages, etc.). So I will always accept those gifts.

7: I am the definition of a foodie.

Food = life. I love all the foods. One of my favorite activities is eating or making food. I am never shy to try new things and it’s very difficult for me to take anything out of my diet. I do restrict my indulgences, but I do give in from time to time.

8: My all-time favorite TV show is Game of Thrones.

Talk to me about this show and we will have hours long conversations. It is my all time favorite show, I have all the seasons on DVD and HBO Now so I can watch them all the time. It’s my addiction and I have waited SO LONG for this current season.

9: I have twin sisters who are some of my best friends and I believe future business partners.

Growing up, my sisters and I did not get along very much. Now, that seems like the complete opposite. I talk to one of my sister’s weekly and love catching up with them. I can honestly see us all being in some sort of business adventure together through our strong suits and I really hope to see that happen.

10: My dream job would be traveling the world and taking photographs for everyone to see.

If I close my eyes and imagine what the perfect life for me would be, it would be traveling the world to take photographs. Combining my two loves into one would be very ideal. I have always been fascinated with sharing stories from every “corner” of the earth and this would be no exception.

I am so glad I got to let you into my life. Is there anything that you would have never guessed? Tell me some things about you in the comments below.
